Lugo stand in the north-west sector of the wide, fertile alluvial plain that surrounds Ravenna. Characterized by a thriving, largely agricultural economy, the historic town centre is of considerable interest and bear witness to a great proliferation of civil and sacred architecture down through the centuries. Archeological finds in the Lugo area demonstrate the existence of a neolithic village of the Fiorano culture (5th millenium BC). The town’s architectural and planning features date to the 18th century, a period of great economic and cultural expansion, but Lugo’s chief monument is the late 16th century Rocca which today houses the Town Hall. The north-west keep was part of the earlier structure built by Ugiccione della Faggiola in 1298. The hanging gardens, accessible from the internal courtyard, merit a visit. The Pavaglione, a rare example of 18th century architecture that anticipates modern town planning concepts, was designed by Giuseppe Campana. Building began in 1771. It is an imposing arcaded court where various kinds of shops were and still are located. The open central area was used as a market place, notably for the silkworm market. The Rossini Theatre, built in the 18th century whith the participation of Bibiena, is active all the year round with plays, concerts and an internationally renowned opera season. Nearby, in the 18th century Palazzo Trisi built by Cosimo Morelli, is the Town Library where you will find a remarkable collection of books, manuscripts, incunabula and 16th century editions. The churches reveal a wealth of artistic heritage from various periods. The Callido and Gatti organs which Giochino Rossini practised on as child are in the Chiesa del Carmine. Born in Pesaro in 1792, the great musician came to Lugo whith his family in 1802 and lived there for several years. The Collegiate Church, built by Cosimo Morelli, has an evocative 15th century cloister. The Suffragio and Sant’Onorio churches contain paintings by Ignazio Stern. The Francesco Baracca monument and museum commemorate the Lugo born pioneer of italian aviation. For lovers of opera, and in particular of one of its greatest 19th century figures, there is a Rossini itinerary which includes a visit to the musicians’s house. The Jewish Cemetery bears witness to Lugo’s large jewish community in past centuries and is of considerable historical-cultural interest. Finally, don’t forget the weekly market : its size and ancient origins have made it a highly appreciated tourist venue. Lugo stand in the lower Ravenna plain where the countryside still shows traces of the ancient Roman land division system and land reclamation of West Romagna that began in the 17th century and was concluded in recent years. The Parco del Loto in the Oasi delle Buche Gallamini in Lugo is a pleasant green area with facilities.
